The UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA): Who Needs It and How to Register
10 Dec

Planning a trip to the UK? If you're currently able to visit without a visa, there's a significant change coming that you need to be aware of: the introduction of the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). This new digital permit is part of a broader move by the UK government to digitise its borders and enhance security.

Here's everything you need to know about the UK ETA: who needs it, what it is, and how to register.

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

The UK ETA is a digital permission to travel for individuals who do not currently need a visa to enter the UK for short stays (tourism, visiting family/friends, business, or transit). It's similar to systems already in place in the US (ESTA), Canada (eTA), and the EU (ETIAS, which is also launching soon).

It is not a visa, but rather an advance authorisation that allows you to board a flight or ferry to the UK. It will be digitally linked to your passport.

Who Needs a UK ETA?

Once fully implemented, the UK ETA will be required for most non-visa nationals who wish to visit the UK. This primarily includes citizens from countries that currently benefit from visa-free travel to the UK.

Specifically, you will need an ETA if you:

  • Are a non-visa national: This means you're a citizen of a country whose nationals can currently enter the UK for short stays without a visa (e.g., EU citizens, Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, etc.).
  • Are visiting the UK for tourism, visiting family/friends, business, or transit.
  • Are transiting through the UK, even if you don't pass through UK border control.

Who will NOT need a UK ETA?

  • British or Irish citizens.
  • Those who already have a UK visa (e.g., Skilled Worker Visa, Student Visa, Family Visa).
  • Those who have immigration status in the UK (e.g., Indefinite Leave to Remain).
  • Residents of the Republic of Ireland travelling within the Common Travel Area.

Important Note: The rollout of the ETA is staggered. As of early 2025 (and likely through the year), it is initially being introduced for citizens of Qatar, followed by citizens of Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. It is expected to apply to other non-visa nationals throughout 2025. Always check the official UK government website for the most up-to-date information on which nationalities require an ETA.

How to Register for a UK ETA (Application Process)

The application process for the UK ETA is designed to be fully digital and straightforward.

  1. Apply Online: The application will be completed through a dedicated UK government app or website.
  2. Provide Personal Details: You will need to provide your personal information, including your full name, date of birth, nationality, and passport details.
  3. Upload Passport Photo: You'll likely be asked to upload a clear digital photograph of your face.
  4. Answer Security Questions: You will need to answer a series of questions related to your travel history, criminal convictions, and security background.
  5. Pay the Fee: A small fee will be charged for each ETA application. The exact fee will be confirmed closer to the full rollout for all nationalities.
  6. Receive Confirmation: Once approved, your ETA will be digitally linked to the passport you used to apply. You'll receive confirmation via email.

Key Things to Know About Your UK ETA:

  • Validity: An ETA will typically be valid for 2 years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • Multiple Entries: During its validity period, an ETA allows for multiple short visits to the UK. You do not need to apply for a new ETA for each trip, as long as your existing ETA is valid and linked to your current passport.
  • Processing Time: Most ETA applications are expected to be processed quickly, often within 72 hours, but it is always advisable to apply in advance of your travel date.
  • No Guarantee of Entry: An ETA grants permission to travel to the UK, but it does not guarantee entry. A Border Force officer will still make the final decision on entry at the UK border.
  • Travel by Land, Sea, or Air: The ETA applies regardless of how you enter the UK (plane, ferry, train).

Why is the UK Introducing the ETA?

The ETA system is a crucial component of the UK's Electronic Borders strategy. It aims to:

  • Enhance Security: By conducting pre-travel checks on all non-visa nationals, the government can identify potential security risks before they travel to the UK.
  • Improve Border Efficiency: Streamlining the entry process for legitimate visitors.
  • Better Data Collection: Providing more comprehensive data on who is entering and leaving the country.
